*** A brief life story of my father

He was born in a hilly countryside, about 110 years ago. Life was certainly hard for him as was to 90 per cent of the population then. He herded one or two ox, which were vital to peasants.

Life was hard and some of the villagers went to Shanghai, to find jobs. My father also did so.He was 27 of age when he came to this biggest city in China.

At first, he sold fruits, maybe carrying the fruits with a shoulder pole.He may also did other such kinds of jobs.

Later, he found a job in a small shop which sold charcoal, coal, firewood.

The owner of the shop was a veteran well-off cook working in a big hotel. His relative was hired by him to manage the shop.

Maybe the relative grafted a lot and the cook, or the owner of the shop, finally decided to give up the shop.

He put up a poster to sell it, but had no response.

He made a decision to sell it to my father.

He said to my father that my father was so honest and hard working, and told him of his decision.

Of course my father was quite poor then, how could he take over a shop?

The cook proposed that he could pay in instalments.

Thus my father became the new owner of the shop overnight!

He worked ever harder, overcaming all difficulties. He even suffered from TB. Nevertheless, he succeeded.

My parents had 7 children in all, 2 died early. My father not only raised such a big family, but also supported his parents and his elder brother, plus the brother's family.

He never forgot the villagers. When villagers came to Shanghai, to look for jobs, he helped them, putting them in. As his living conditions were so limited, he would let the poor villagers sleep under his bed!

Things unexpected happen all the time--The Japanese invasion began. My mother took us children to evade, walking along the train tracks to live in our native village.

Not long after the Japanes surrended, the Chinese government was defeated by the Communists. Before the takeover of the state power, all the shop owners lost a great deal owing to price limit.

At the beginning of the Communist power, shop owers' fate gradully recovered. But a few years later, the Communist regime deprived the property of shop owners, factory owners, and other "capitalists".

Worse than that, a few years later, in the so called "Great Cultural Revolution" years, all the "capitalists" suffered a lot for their "exploitation" of the workers.

Luckily my father finally lived a peaceful life after his retirement, and passed away without any pain, at the age of 72.
