*** A life story about my mother

My mother was 11 years younger than my father. They were both born in a bit hilly countryside, quite poor like most of the Chinese peasants then.
Her father's first child is a boy, the second being my mother. Both because girls were looked down upon, and because the family was so poor, her father decided to give up the new born girl.
It was not uncommom then to drown a new born girl in a urine barrel. But my mother's mother changed the decision by taking the girl out of the barrel who was already purple colored owing to coldness.
Later, my mother's mother went to Shanghai to work as a maidservant. She brought my mother with her.My mother was under 10, and very short, obviously owing to the above suffering after delivery.
The master of the family my mother's mother worked in was kind hearted. He asked my grandmother to buy a bowl of beanmilk for the poor girl every day, and he paid for it.
Thanks for his kindness, Mother recovered and was healthy for the first time.
She did not have a chance to get any schooling, of course. In her early teen's, she did a lot of labour, and then went to a reeling mill as a child labourer.
Later Mother and Father got married in Shanghai, hundreds of km from their native villages.
They had 7 children, two died early. We are 3 girls and 2 sons, I being the 4th child.
Mother did all she could to help Father to maintain a shop of coal, charcoal and firewood prosperious. They not only supported a big family, but also helped relatives in native villages. Her motto is:"(when a villager comes,we will give them at least) one night's boarding and two meals".In fact, she did much more, such as putting them up in an attaic, or even under a bed! I still remember more than one villagers staying at our home, who suffered from infectious diseases.
Mother was busy all day long. She was a good neighbour in the neighborhood, never carrying tells.
In the early years after the Communists took power, she had a chance to learn Chinese characters, but she never had the ability to read a newspaper, and never had enough time to do so.
In 1960-1962, owing to the wrong policies of top leaders, China suffered so greatly that we are at the brink of starvation.Mother was such a qualified housekeeper that I "never know what starvation is".
I was a pupil/student of "bookworm". I was privileged to live and do my homework in an attic. Mother never had to worry about my study (I was a top one in class). During those starvation years, after I finished my homework,I would open my desk drawer to find a cake put by Mother.
Mother's another motto is: "When I am too old and too sick, I will commit suicide." But we had never thought of it that she should suffer from Senile Dementia! She died in her 80's...
She lives forever in the hearts of her descendents.
